Get Involved with 5th Gospel Christians

5th Gospel Christians believe in sustainable self-empowerment. We listen. We are present.
We hope to help people find their self-belief and courage to get up and move ahead on the road, empowering them to change the end of the story. We focus on adult education and building relationships through direct engagement and caring. We give emergency relief where we can, all funded by donations. We appreciate your generosity and time shared with us.

Below are some things we do and ways in which you might like to be involved.

Assistance - Financial

Christmas & Easter distribution

We collect funds to give direct financial assistance from UK parishes to 112 refugee families in Jordan (320 souls) enclosed in personally-addressed cards.

Emergency donations

We collect donations for emergencies. We help acute medical cases, consultations at hospital and a few medical long-term conditions.

Funding for Education

Through sponsorship of students to cover costs of teachers and materials for English classes for adults..

Learning

English for Life

5th Gospel Christians teach Communicative English to adults using TESOL student-led learning methods. Students include beginners and intermediate levels.

We welcome teachers to join us for a month or longer, accommodation in Jordan is provided

Student Sponsorship

In January 2021 we have 22 students studying English at different levels

When Cambridge School closed in 2020 due to Covid-19, 5th Gospel Christians began a new programme, teaching in collaboration with UNIHOUSE in Amman. We link personal sponsors with each student.  All students are on an academic year’s study for an International Language Testing System (IELTS) score.

Could you sponsor a student?

Activities

For Children

In the 12 weeks of the 2019 hot summer holidays we organised swimming instruction for children up to the age of twelve. Due to Covid-19 in 2020 sadly we had to cancel. In summer 2021 we hope to do the same again and include teenagers.

We hope again to sponsor the parish summer camp and run art and drama classes.

From January 2021 we have a Covid-19 Safe KIDS’ CLUB for little ones up to 10. The aim is to get the children out of cramped living spaces and to have somewhere to play.

For Adults

Learning-based activities of all kinds, and social events such as “bring and share” meals with dancing and singing.

In 2021 we’re hoping to add gym membership and swimming programmes, particularly for the mothers.

We welcome volunteers! Join us in Jordan for a week, a month or more, to help with these activities. Accommodation provided.

Linking

Linking Parishes

We directly link parishes in the UK with St John the Baptist parish in Madaba where most Iraqi children in Madaba are at school. We work with the priests and school teachers to help support needy parishioners, the scout troop and the choir.

UK parishes and knitting groups produce wonderful sweaters, hats and scarves for us to distribute; also spectacle frames, and collecting and making up little bags of beauty products for the ladies.

Link your parish with Madaba parish in Jordan.

Coming to Jordan

Come to Jordan for a wonderful holiday to visit the sites of Petra, Jerash, Mount Nebo, the Baptism site of Jesus and the world-famous Madaba mosaic Map. Add on a few days to meet Jordanian Christians and Iraqi Christian refugees.

Add on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth. Many wonderful friendships have developed through these visits.

Please contact us for full details of travel and accommodation.

Our Engagement with Jordan

In Madaba with St John’s parish and Iraqi refugees, we help with food, keeping homes warm, medical help and school registration, books and uniforms.

We keep up morale for the refugees with English classes at all levels, sponsorships for students, IT, parenting workshops, exercise, “bring and share” lunches, music and dancing.

We offer children swimming lessons, and to join the parish summer camp and sports.

We support the parish choir, the scout troop and parish funds for the needy.

Our Engagement with Palestine

In Bethlehem we support the following:

  • Hogar Niño Dios – home for abandoned and handicapped children

  • The Salesians of Don Bosco – working with the young

  • Sabeel – Kairos working for peace and justice

  • Parish of Sta. Caterina - the Latin Nativity Church

  • Crisis funding
